Wonderfully luxurious large silk satin shawl, lovingly hand dyed with madder and oak gall tannin; printed with virginia creeper, ash, cotinus [smokebush] and catalpa [Indian bean] leaves: lovingly hand dyed and hand printed with sustainable methods and materials [SC298].
After preparing ['mordanting'] the silk shawl to receive the natural dyes and pigments, virginia creeper, chocolate vine, cotinus [smokebush] and catalpa [Indian bean tree] leaves from my garden and neighbourhood in south Liverpool, UK, were placed on the shawl. It was then covered with a 'carrier' blanket soaked in madder dye and oak gall tannin, which transferred the dye to the background. It was all then bundled onto a copper pipe and steamed for 70 minutes in my trusty aluminium fish kettle.
A totally unique and striking accessory for many occasions.
Approx 180cm x 45cm
